“The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy, we can all sense a mysterious connection to each other.” — Meryl Streep
I had the privilege of meeting and interviewing Mrs. Paula-Manczuk Hannay, Development Officer for the City of Fremont’s Human Services Department, on behalf of Project Jatropha, to explore potential partnership opportunities and learn more about the city’s services and programs addressing the issues of homelessness.
Excerpts from Mrs. Hannay’s Interview:
As the Development Officer, Mrs. Hannay plays a vital role in addressing homelessness in Fremont. The City of Fremont and its community partners have implemented various initiatives to support individuals experiencing homelessness. The services include:
– The Winter Relief Program, providing hotel rooms during cold months
– The Safe Parking Program, offering overnight parking in church lots
– Access Point, connecting individuals with case management and documentation assistance
While affordable housing remains the greatest need, the city is working to increase options despite the complexity of the process. Unhoused individuals require basic necessities like food, showers, laundry facilities, and clothing. To contribute, one can donate hygiene items, clothing, and food, and visit the city’s website at https://www.fremont.gov/government/departments/human-services/give-back/ways-to-support for a list of needed items.
I am truly grateful for Mrs. Hannay’s dedication to addressing homelessness and hope this conversation inspires others to get involved in their community. Team Project Jatropha looks forward to continuing the conversation and exploring ways to support efforts to address homelessness. I am extremely thankful for Mrs. Hannay giving us the time to conduct this interview and share her valuable insights.
